Our Story

Our story is one of empowerment, community, and spiritual growth. Founded in 1999 by Roberta Guillory, The Red Shoes was created as a space to enrich women’s lives through supportive, inclusive participation and spiritual exploration. Our mission stems from the belief that women thrive when they are part of a community that nurtures their journey to self-discovery and authenticity.

Initially located in a small storefront on Perkins Road in Baton Rouge, we grew steadily, and, by 2003, The Red Shoes relocated to a larger, more permanent space on Government Street to expand our offerings.

While we primarily focus on creating safe, transformative spaces for women, we welcome men to many of our programs and collaborate with other organizations to amplify our reach.

The name “The Red Shoes” is inspired by a fairy tale that was reinterpreted by Clarissa Pinkola Estés in her book Women Who Run with the Wolves. In this version, the red shoes symbolize a woman’s return to her authentic self—a reconnection with her spirit, creativity, and inner truth. This symbolism mirrors the journey of Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz, where the red shoes (or ruby slippers) are a path back home, representing a woman’s quest for wholeness and empowerment.

Throughout the years, The Red Shoes has provided countless workshops, retreats, and group experiences centered on spiritual growth, personal development, and holistic healing. Under the leadership of Wendy Herschman (pictured below), who served for 18 years, the organization became a cornerstone for women in Baton Rouge.

Today, The Red Shoes continues to thrive under its new Executive Director, Racheal Hebert, who is building upon its strong foundation while envisioning the future. The legacy of Roberta Guillory lives on, with The Red Shoes remaining a symbol of empowerment, self-discovery, and the transformative power of community for all who walk through its doors.

The profound history and mission of The Red Shoes were lovingly captured by Roberta Guillory in her memoir, Full Circle. In this inspiring work, Roberta reflects on her personal journey in founding The Red Shoes and the transformative power of creating a space where women can gather, heal, and grow. Full Circle is not only a testament to her vision and perseverance but also a celebration of the countless women whose lives have been touched and enriched by The Red Shoes over the years.
