Meditative Origami Workshop: Sadako's Paper Cranes

Sunday, November 10th
2 - 4 pm

At The Red Shoes

Experience the calming art of paper folding, Origami, as we come together to create paper cranes in remembrance of Hiroshima Day. In Japanese folklore, the crane is a sacred bird symbolizing good luck, long life, and fidelity. The legend says that if a sick person folds 1,000 paper cranes, their wish will come true.

Sadako Sasaki was two years old when she was exposed to radiation from the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima in 1945. She survived the bombing but was diagnosed with leukemia at age 12. In her quest for healing, Sadako folded over 1,400 cranes before her passing in 1955.

Our workshop will begin with a short film that tells Sadako's story. We will then learn how to fold a paper crane—a process that requires patience, dedication, and meditative focus, lending a spiritual element to the practice.

Join The Red Shoes community effort to fold 1,000 paper cranes by next July, which will be mailed to Japan for August 6, 2025 in honor of Sadako and all the lives lost in Hiroshima. Together, we can become a wave of compassion, remembrance, and hope.

Facilitated by Pam Arnold, collage art enthusiast.

Spiritual Ecology Circle

Mondays Weekly

Continuing November 11th

5 - 6:15 pm

Hybrid

Join us to explore the spiritual dimension of our present ecological crisis. Spiritual Ecology Circle grows out of the awareness that the outer destruction we see in the world is related to an inner disconnection from and disregard for the sacred within all of life. We cannot address the climate catastrophe with data alone – we need new ways of seeing and thinking. Unseen Beings, will lead us on a path of discovery, "We may speak of ‘saving the planet,’ but we usually just mean ‘guarding the storehouse,’ not supporting the welfare of all living beings…. and the human-centered story is killing us.”

Unseen Beings examines our ecological diagnosis, its historical causes and its much-needed treatment, as well as exploring:

  • how and why we constructed a human-centric worldview
  • amazing recent discoveries around non-human intelligence
  • how religious traditions have dealt with questions of nature, sentience and ecology
  • critical connections between human health and environmental health

Climate anxiety leaves us feeling confused and powerless, but there is another way. Through our guided study, we can recover our sense of kinship with non-human beings and uncover a path to become builders of a better future.

Join us for a transformative book study on How to Know a Person: The Art of Seeing Others Deeply and Being Deeply Seen by David Brooks.
