How to Know a Person helps readers become more understanding and considerate toward others, and to find the joy that comes from being seen. Feel the warm welcome of a heart-led circle as we embark on a journey of compassion, curiosity, and deep connection.

Spiritual Ecology Circle: New Book - Unseen Beings: How We Forgot the World Is More Than Human by Erik Jampa Andersson

Mondays Weekly

Continuing October 7th

5 - 6:15 pm

Hybrid

Join us to explore the spiritual dimension of our present ecological crisis. Spiritual Ecology Circle grows out of the awareness that the outer destruction we see in the world is related to an inner disconnection from and disregard for the sacred within all of life. We cannot address the climate catastrophe with data alone – we need new ways of seeing and thinking. Unseen Beings, will lead us on a path of discovery, "We may speak of ‘saving the planet,’ but we usually just mean ‘guarding the storehouse,’ not supporting the welfare of all living beings…. and the human-centered story is killing us.”

Unseen Beings examines our ecological diagnosis, its historical causes and its much-needed treatment, as well as exploring:

  • how and why we constructed a human-centric worldview
  • amazing recent discoveries around non-human intelligence
  • how religious traditions have dealt with questions of nature, sentience and ecology
  • critical connections between human health and environmental health

Climate anxiety leaves us feeling confused and powerless, but there is another way. Through our guided study, we can recover our sense of kinship with non-human beings and uncover a path to become builders of a better future.

From Awareness to Action: Transforming Justice

A Powerful 3-Part Series with Angela A. Allen-Bell

Sundays, October 13, 27, & November 3
- 3:30 pm

At The Red Shoes

Are you concerned about Louisiana's justice system? The high rate of incarceration and the high number of people returning to prison invites us to think of a better way. Learn how you can make a difference in this series led by Angela A. Allen-Bell, author, lawyer and activist scholar renowned for her groundbreaking work in restorative and transitional justice. For sessions 2 and 3, pre-reading each book will deepen our discussion and understanding. Please attempt to order and read both books before attending the 2nd and 3rd sessions.

October 13

Professor Bell will share her pivotal role in ending the use of non-unanimous juries in Louisiana, a historic transformation that reshaped the state's legal system. She’ll discuss her journey from legal activism to authoring two new significant books. She will share why she describes Louisiana's legal system as a system that harms. How can we address systemic failures in justice?

Book Study: October 27

Based on her new book, Under Indictment: Race, Juries & Justice in Louisiana, Professor Bell will explain and critique Louisiana's legal system and highlight its impersonal, assembly-line, profit-driven nature. With new awareness, we can reimagine justice.

Book Study: November 3

Professor Bell leads us into a new inquiry in Diversity in the Jury Box and Beyond: A Formula for Transforming Louisiana's Legal System. She offers the research that tells how best to achieve an accurate and reliable jury verdict that has usage beyond the jury box. This book extends the conversation, offering a blueprint for systemic change through a deeper understanding of deliberative processes and transitional justice. Think change in the home, the workplace, the medical system and the education system.

Author book signings after sessions 2 and 3. Both books are available online: Under Indictment: Race, Juries & Justice in Louisiana and Diversity in the Jury Box and Beyond: A Formula for Transforming Louisiana's Legal System.

Facilitated by Angela A. Allen-Bell, graduate of the Southern University Law Center and holds the B. K. Agnihotri Endowed Professorship. She is a respected legal scholar and expert on constitutional law; civil and human rights; social, restorative and transitional justice; and, the interplay between race and justice. Professor Bell has worked on several historic advocacy campaigns, such as the Angola 3 case, the case of Soledad Brother John Clutchette and the case of Robert Holbrook. She is a member of the National Black Lawyers-Top 100 and the Fellows of the American Bar Foundation – both being invitation-only.
